Alt Y Ferin - A Brief History

Castle Allt-y-Ferin occupied the end of a ridge above the River Cothi two miles north of Llanegwad. The castle does not appear in recorded history after 1145 although the princes of Deheubarth may have occupied it until nearby Dryslwyn castle was built. The triangular enclosure, divided into two by a cross-ditch, is naturally defended by a steep fall on two sides.

A ditch and rampart cut off the level approach, overlooked by a conical motte which is encircled by its own ditch. This impressive earthwork may be the castle of Dinweiler raised by Gilbert de Clare, earl of Pembroke, in 1145 during a brief period of Norman expansion into Welsh Deheubarth.
